Welsh Parliament Abolishes
Prescription Charges The Welsh
parliament has
abolished prescription charges throughout Wales from April 1st of this
year. This move coincides with a rise in prescription costs of 20p per
item in England and Scotland. The new standard prescription charge in
the rest of the UK will be 6.85. My keyboard does not have a UK Pound
symbol but the price quoted is obviously in UK Sterling. At current
exchange rates that equates to approximately 14 dollars.
The legislation will cost an estimated 60 million dollars a year. The population of Wales is approximately 3 million. Therefore Wales has roughly the same tax base as Oregon. GDP in Oregon is higher. Why can we not introduce a similar measure here? Admittedly Wales has a few advantages in the form of subsidies from Whitehall and from the EU but that should be more than offset by Oregon`s superior economic performance.
